Chapter 22
Jessâ words resounded in Rowanâs head for hours. Hoax-monger in a monkey suit. He pounded his fist in the counter. Lauren flinched. Rowan wasnât prone to fits of rage, but his dander was definitely up.
âWell, at least we know one thing,â she said, pushing her food around on her plate.
âWhatâs that?â He paced a few more moments before coming to sit down at the table across from her. âWhat?â
âI wasnât kidnapped by Bigfoot.â
He buried his eyes in his hands âJeez,â he snarled. âIt was a lot easier for me to stomach the thought that a Bigfoot did this to you.â He put his hand over hers, his thumb brushing over the small, cool diamond. It softened his anger just a bit.
âYou know what this means, donât you?â she asked. It took a moment for him to respond.
âWhat?â
âWe have to go back.â
âWe canât go back.â
âWe have to,â she said. âYou know Iâm right.â
âWe are not going back. Dammit,â he snapped.
âWe donât have any other choice. We have to get more data, Rowan. We have to. The truth, remember?â
âJess sent her report to the FBI. Itâs in their hands to investigate now.â
âWe have to go back,â Lauren repeated.
âWe are not going back!â he snapped. âYou still have your arm in a sling. You could have died.â
âBut I didnât.â
âYou could have.â
âYou know I am right.â
âWeâre not going back,â he stated flatly. He set his jaw, but his lip quivered. âWeâre not.â
âWe have to.â
âNo. We donât.â

Lauren was miffed. She was tired of being confined to bed, tired of trying to make herself comfortable on the sofa. She thought the recliner was slightly better. Her mood was brooding and restless. Rowan wasnât any better off. The lack of sleep wore on him and he often went on long runs to try and clear his mind. It didnât seem to be helping.
Limited to watching television and surfing the internet Lauren had no such opportunity to ease her stress. She was too bored to really pay attention, least of all to the television. Sheâd already made three tours through the ninety-some channels before she got fed up. She slung the remote across the room and nearly hit Rowanâs head with it.
He glanced up from the computer. âWhat?â
âIâm bored,â she moaned. âIâm tired of sitting around.â
âWhat do you want me to do?â
âTake me to Washington,â she insisted.
âWhere do you want to go on our honeymoon?â He returned his attention to the work.
âWashington.â
âIâm serious. Iâm not taking you on another investigation until we decide where weâre going on our honeymoon. And we arenât honeymooning anywhere where thereâs something to investigate.â
âLike thereâs anywhere like that.â She leaned back the recliner.
âLauren,â he pleaded. âHelp me here.â
âWhere have we not been?â
âSo far, weâve missed Antarctica and Alaska,â he said. âThereâs a reason for that. I donât like to be cold.â
âThen weâll go to the beach,â she said.
âBermuda?â He smiled. He thought of their investigation in the Bermuda triangle.
âNo way,â she scolded. âI liked Bermuda, but you drank two pitchers of rum swizzles and nearly fell off the cliff by the hotel.
